Exploring AI’s Promise and Responsibility in the Nonprofit Sector

ree

Earlier this week, Arabella’s CEO Himesh Bhise hosted a special guest, Cheryl Contee, for an internal fireside chat on “Artificial Intelligence in the Nonprofit Sector.”

Cheryl is a pioneering technology entrepreneur and digital transformation expert — the co-author of the bestselling new book AI for Nonprofits: Putting Artificial Intelligence to Work for Your Cause. Drawing from insights from more than 50 AI experts, the book helps nonprofit leaders navigate the opportunities and responsibilities that come with integrating AI into their missions.

During the conversation, Cheryl and Himesh explored the rapid evolution of AI and what it means for changemakers. Cheryl shared that, much like the Industrial Revolution reshaped society, the rise of AI calls for a new social contract — one that honors human dignity, equity, and rest, while embracing tools that can extend impact and efficiency.

“AI has the power to democratize creativity and problem-solving,” Cheryl noted. “Anyone with a phone now holds more computing power than what put humans on the moon. The question is: what will we do with it?”

Himesh reflected on the unique role Arabella and its partners can play in helping nonprofits adopt AI both responsibly and strategically.

“At Arabella, we see both an opportunity and a responsibility to embrace AI in ways that advance impact — from internal efficiency to ethical, client-centered innovation,” he said. “We have a chance to help ensure this technology strengthens, rather than disrupts, the social sector.”

The discussion also touched on emerging frontiers like quantum computingethical AI governance, and the importance of inclusive leadership in shaping how these tools are used. Cheryl encouraged nonprofit leaders to “lead from the top” and engage their teams in active dialogue, learning, and policy-building — not only to stay current, but to help shape the future.

Arabella will continue these conversations as part of our ongoing exploration of how innovation, equity, and impact intersect.

For those interested in learning more, Cheryl’s book AI for Nonprofits offers a practical and inspiring roadmap for mission-driven organizations.
